Ironwood Country Club

INTRODUCTION

Ironwood Country Club is one of the most established, diverse, and genuinely special private golf communities in Palm Desert, and one of the longest continuously operating private clubs in the Coachella Valley. Tucked directly against the Santa Rosa Mountains on 800 acres of prime South Palm Desert, Ironwood was built in an era when the desert was still being discovered, and it carries the warmth, character, and authenticity that only comes from five decades of genuine community life.

Opened in 1973, Ironwood was conceived with the input of Arnold Palmer, who was instrumental in shaping the community's early character and whose spirit permeates the golf experience to this day. During the 1960s and 1970s,icons including Bing Crosby, Phil Harris, and Arnold Palmer called this enclave home, adding a layer of Hollywood and golf legend history to the property that no newer development can claim.

The two 18-hole championship courses were originally designed by Desmond Muirhead and Ted Robinson in consultation with Arnold Palmer, and most recently updated by former PGA player and acclaimed architect John Foughtin 2023. The South Course has the distinction of hosting a US Open qualifying round annually, one of the very few private courses in the Coachella Valley to carry this honor. The North Course, known as the "Shot Makers Course,"offers a more compact and walkable experience consistently rated among the most enjoyable in the desert.

With over 1,100 homes across 13 separate HOAs, ranging from 1970s and 1980s condominiums to the newest and most exclusive section, Canyon View Estates, Ironwood offers a breadth of real estate options unmatched by any other private golf community in Palm Desert. A $24 million clubhouse reconstruction reopened in 2007 as a 50,000 sq ft Tuscan-style facility. Members affectionately call it "Camp Ironwood" for its activity-rich, community-centered lifestyle that keeps residents coming back season after season.

THE COURSES

Ironwood Country Club features two private 18-hole championship courses winding through the rolling foothills of the Santa Rosa Mountains, each offering a distinctly different golf experience.

The South Course
18 holes | Par 72 | 4,757 to 7,274 yards | 8 sets of tees
Designed by Desmond Muirhead in consultation with Arnold Palmer | Opened 1973 | Updated by John Fought 2023

The championship course at Ironwood and one of the most celebrated private layouts in the Coachella Valley. Considered one of the finest layouts in the desert, the South Course plays across lush fairways, glorious water features, and tight, fast greens. Playing from 4,757 to 7,274 yards across eight sets of tees, it accommodates golfers of all skill levels while presenting a genuine championship challenge from the back. The South Course has the extraordinary distinction of hosting a US Open qualifying round annually, making it one of the very few private courses in the desert to carry this honor.

The North Course
18 holes | Par 71 | 4,566 to 6,212 yards
Designed by Ted Robinson in consultation with Arnold Palmer | Opened 1977 | Updated by John Fought 2023

This is a shotmaker's course requiring strategy and accuracy at every turn. The most recent redesign work by John Fought in 2023 enhanced several holes and modernized all practice facilities.

Both courses include two driving ranges, pitching and chipping practice areas, practice bunkers, and two putting greens. A fully staffed pro shop with PGA instructors, golf groups, clinics, and individual lessons rounds out one of the most complete golf programs in Palm Desert.

HISTORY

Ironwood Country Club opened in 1973 on 800 acres of South Palm Desert, tucked directly against the Santa Rosa Mountains. The community was conceived with the significant personal involvement of Arnold Palmer, whose influence on the golf courses and the club's identity from the very beginning set Ironwood apart from anything else being built in the desert at the time.

During the 1960s and 1970s, the Ironwood area attracted some of the greatest names in entertainment and golf. Bing Crosby, Phil Harris, and Arnold Palmer all called this enclave home during its formative years, laying the foundation for a community culture that has always valued genuine connection over pretension.

The South Course was originally designed by Desmond Muirhead in consultation with Arnold Palmer and opened in 1973. It immediately established itself as one of the premier private layouts in the desert, and its selection as the annual host of a US Open qualifying round cemented its reputation as a true championship venue. The North Course, designed by Ted Robinson also in consultation with Palmer, opened in 1977 as the companion layout.

In 2002 to 2004, both courses received a comprehensive $5 million renovation, with several holes redesigned to improve strategy and playability. Former PGA Tour player and respected architect John Fought returned to update the courses again most recently in 2023, ensuring Ironwood's golf experience remains among the finest in the valley.

The 50,000 sq ft Tuscan-style clubhouse underwent a landmark $24 million reconstruction and reopened in 2007 with multiple dining venues, a renovated sports center, and his and her locker rooms, transforming the social heart of the community into one of the finest club facilities in Palm Desert.

The newest section of the community, Canyon View Estates, added 52 custom estate homesites with the most spectacular mountain and lake views in Ironwood, completing what is now one of the most diverse and comprehensive private golf communities in the Coachella Valley.
